Its landscape shifts from scrub jungle and open plains to shimmering lagoons, rocky outcrops, and a wild Indian Ocean coastline, creating perfect habitat for an extraordinary variety of animals. Early morning game drives here feel like stepping into a nature documentary: leopards resting on boulders, elephants bathing at waterholes, crocodiles basking on lake banks, and peacocks displaying in the golden light. Bird lovers will be delighted by more than 200 recorded species, from painted storks and pelicans to hornbills. Ancient rock temples hidden within the park add a cultural layer to the adventure. Minneriya National Park 02
Cultural Triangle

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park, set in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, is home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Built around the ancient Minneriya Tank, a reservoir over 1,600 years old, the park becomes a meeting place for wild elephants each dry season. As the water level drops, fresh green grass spreads across the exposed lakebed, and herds of elephants arrive from the surrounding forests to feed, bathe, and socialise in an event known as The Gathering, often described as the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world. Mothers guide tiny calves, young bulls play-fight, and large bulls rest in the golden light. Beyond elephants, Minneriya shelters sambar deer, toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, and colourful waterbirds.

Jeep tracks wind through shady forest and alongside shimmering lakes, offering excellent chances to spot leopards and elusive sloth bears, as well as elephants, crocodiles, and herds of spotted deer. Kaudulla National Park 05
Habarana / Sigiriya

Kaudulla National Park

Kaudulla National Park lies close to Habarana and Sigiriya and is one of the finest places to watch wild elephants in their natural home. Centred on the ancient Kaudulla Tank, the park forms a vital link in the elephant corridor connecting Minneriya, Wasgamuwa, and other protected areas of the region. As the dry season deepens, herds move between these tanks in search of water and fresh grass, and Kaudulla becomes a favourite feeding ground later in the season. Safaris here are often quieter than in Minneriya, giving photographers and nature lovers more space to enjoy each sighting.
